Ryan sat alone on the fender of his car, smoking a cigarette before school. He hated his piece of crap car, it was a '91 Toyota Camry. The paint was alright, but the car was so old. Ryan took a long drag of his cigarette and puffed the the smoke out slowly, shaking his head. He knew that his mom couldn't afford to buy him a new car right now-he was lucky to have one at all. Most of the time he bought stuff for himself, he paid his own phone bill and bought his own clothes-that way his mother could provide for Ellie, and she didn't have to pay for his expenses. Ryan liked that he had to grow up so soon, it helped him to learn to take care of himself. He knew that if he was one of those preppy rich kids, he would never make it on his own. Ryan was just glad his parents had given him his car on his sixteenth birthday, he would never have been able to buy one for himself.

Brevlyn always walked through the parking lot on her way home. She did not own a car or anything, there was just a path on the other side of it, that made getting to her house a lot quicker. So that was the path in which she choose to take. Sometimes it lead to harassment from some punk, which bothered her most. She did not go out of her way to mess with their day to day lives, so why couldn't they leave her alone long enough to get on with hers. Did she not deserve the same courtesy that she gave them. Were they really such animals that they did not have manners, or know how to speak to someone without trying to intimidate them. Brevlyn hated people like that.
Halfway through the parking lot Brevlyn got a pain in her chest which caused her to trip over her feet and drop her books onto the ground. Grumbling under her breath she bent down to pick them up. Noticing not to far in front of her when she got down there was someone against a car. She felt her cheeks get a little pink and had this fear that she was going to be harassed yet again today. All because her stupid heart decided to give her a jolt of pain. That was just what she needed today. Trying to ignore that the person was there, Brevlyn concentrated on picking up her things.

Ryan saw a girl who had dropped her books, and he immediately jumped off of his car, landing flatly on the ground and walking over to the girl. He didn't particularly care what clique the girl was in; Ryan was just a gentleman. If the girl was in fact a prep, which it seemed she was, just looking at her clothes-it was a known fact that preps and punks dressed completely different-Ryan would still help her. She might be a bitch and act like she's some kind of superpower, who doesn't need help from someone like him, but he would still try. When Ryan got to be where the girl was, bent over to pick up her books, he knelt in front of her, picking up a couple of books.
When there were no longer books on the floor, Ryan stood up. He held out the books to her, not bothering to smile or anything friendly like that. Punks were not nice to preps. That just didn't happen. It seemed like it was too early for any of his friends to be around and see this act of kindness, but Ryan had fallen into the habit, and whether they were around or not, if he must help, then he did it with the littlest bit of generosity... If it really was generosity at all. Ryan waited for the girl to yank her books away from him, or to make a face like she expected him to rip out a few pages before she could take it back, some stuck up attitude that said, 'I'm better than you, don't touch my stuff,' the way all preps did.

Brevlyn gatherd most of her books before the boy jumped down and helped her pick up the rest. Standing up she took the books she had and brushed them off and then looked over to the boy. He was standing a few feet in front of her, holding her books out for her. Brevlyn gave him a smile and took her books from him. She proceeded to brush them off as well. She was not into dirt, which was now all over books. She would not care in general, but they were the school's books. She did not want to have to pay a fee or anything for returning them completely dirty. Once the books were brushed off well enough to meet the standards she felt the school would have for their books, she looked back over to the boy. "thank you."
Deciding she did not want this to be something that happened later down the line of walking home, since she obviously had no control over her heart today, so it was a possibility it could happen again. Wanting to avoid that, she took any extra minute to put her books into her backpack. It was a little heavy over her shoulders, but that was the price she had to pay to avoid a future occurance. Still feeling a little red in he face and a little nervous as well she turned her attention back over to the boy. "thank you again, I really do appreciate it." She always appreciated looking like a moron.

Ryan gave back her books and had nearly turned around to walk back to his car when the girl spoke. He definately hadn't expected her to talk to him, but she had. Ryan simply nodded. "Its no problem." He said, turning all the way around and walking towards his car. Ryan put his hands in his pockets and stopped in front of his car, thinking. What was that girl doing walking away from the school? School hadn't even started yet, and she was skipping? Punks were the ones that normally did that type of thing. Ryan turned back around, sitting back on his car again to see what the girl would do.

Brevlyn smiled at him when he told her it was no problem and then he turned away. She generally had very short conversations with people, being as she was friendly and all, but this was probably not the case for it. Why would a punk want to take time out of his day to talk to her? Besides, she was supposed to be heading home. She had picked up all of her school work for rest of the week. Just incase she could not make it back into school. It was only Wednesday, but her heart had been bothering her and her mother was afraid that she was going to have to go back to the hospital. She hated spending her time at the hospital, not that spending it at home was much better. She never really got out of the house much. Her mother hated the fact that she even let her daughter step outside to go to school. At anytime Brevlyn’s heart could just quit on her and if she does not get immediately to the hospital she will die. That made going school a little on the scary side for her, but she hated being locked up at home. She did not really even have any good friends to spend her time with. None that would treat her normally after finding out she is on the verge of dying.
Brevlyn let out a small laugh. That would be the funniest conversation. She would love to see the look on her face when she told someone. Hey I am Brevlyn, my heart doesn’t work and I am supposed to die in two years. That would be the conversation she would love to have before she dies. Sure she has the chance of living but that would involve someone dying and her getting a heart. She was so far down the heart transplant list that she would not hopeful at all. She would probably say no anyways. Someone else out there deserves to have a heart more then she does. Her parents tell her that she deserves it more then some of them, but she does not understand why.
Thrown from her thoughts Brevlyn brough her hand and wrapped it around it her shoulder. That was what she did when her heart gave her a jolt. When it happened it felt like she could not breath and that someone was taking there hand and squeezing her heart between there cold fingers. As bad as the pain was it was the not breathing that she did not like. It felt for split seconds that she was suffocating. This is why she was heading home. Why she was not going to enjoy a day at school like the rest of these people. This is why she had some many books with her and not in her locker. This is why life Suck. Grabbing her shoulder she tried to take a few deep breaths to calm herself down, but the pain was just getting worse. Just breath Brevlyn, just breath and make it home. Don’t do this here, not in front of him, you are making a fool of yourself you know that right?

The look of pain on the girl's face didn't get past Ryan. He saw it and tood up again, swearing at himself for his manners. Ryan should not be helping this prep or even caring that she was in pain. He, on most days, was supposed to be the one putting her in pain. But Ryan was a nice guy, and when it came to his gentlemanly ways, it didn't matter what clique someone was in. On the day that Kenzie Mykals was in need, Ryan would see which side of his mind would win, the punk or the gentleman.
He walked at a fast pace back over to the girl, stopping her from walking any further. Ryan stood in front of her, and though his face showed distress at his actions, he let his voice carry out in a caring way. "You look... Like you're in alot of pain." He said, frowning. "Just-I'm not going to ask whats going on or why-But let me take your bag and drive you wherever you were headed." Ryan tilted his head to the side, half raising his arm to reach for her bag. He was aware that she might not give it to him.
Ryan wanted to help, he was more than willing, though he hated the idea of it. He figured, maybe there was still a chance to not have to do this. She would refuse his help and it would make him mad. Then he could go about his business and not think about her anymre, nor would he be grieved over not having helped her out, he would be too pissed off. Ryan held onto that string of hope, believing in his head that she would say no to him, but in his heart that he would still try to help after she had said no.
